How to Decide on AC Repair vs. AC Replacement

There are times when air conditioning repairs make sense. Repairs can extend the lifespan of your air conditioner and boost energy efficiency. But eventually, your air conditioner will need to be replaced. The question is, how do you know when to invest in a replacement instead of repairs?

You can give our team a call and we can help you decide whether not it’s time for air conditioning installation in Sussex County, DE. In the meantime, you can keep reading to learn more about repairing your central air conditioner versus replacing it with a brand new unit.

Making AC Repairs

Investing in repairs for your air conditioner is a good idea as long as repair costs are not too pricey. The more expensive repair costs are, the greater the chances are of something being seriously wrong with your air conditioner.

Minor repairs are an investment in tweaks that can improve efficiency and extend the lifespan of your unit. Keeping up with small AC repairs is most important during the period when your manufacturer’s warranty is active, which is usually around ten years. Maintenance tweaks that occur all along are important because they are usually included in the terms of your warranty.

Skipping out on minor repairs can void the warranty because you’re not doing your part to maintain the unit. If something major does go wrong with your AC during the warranty period, and you’ve kept up with timely maintenance, your manufacturer’s warranty will cover any unusual repair costs.

Replacing Your AC

If something major goes wrong and you have to spend thousands of dollars on repairing your unit, it may be time to spend that money to replace the air conditioner instead. Expensive repairs can add up a couple of different ways.

It’s possible to have a single major problem that costs you thousands of dollars to fix. Other times you may experience frequent repairs that come one after the other until they add up to a higher costs. Any time you have persistent problems, that’s a red flag of a larger issue. Maybe your AC is reaching the end of its life and parts are all beginning to wear down.

Once the manufacturer’s warranty is up, you will be left paying for all repairs out-of-pocket. Since the  average lifespan of a residential air conditioner is between 10 and 15 years, if you keep up with maintenance, it’s likely your unit will last for 15 years. But if you skipped maintenance or didn’t call for service when things went wrong with your unit, the AC may need to be replaced closer to the 10-year mark.

When you’re spending thousands of dollars, you want that money to go as far as it can. It may make more sense to upgrade to a new unit that is more energy efficient with a long expected lifespan ahead. New ACs offer the benefit of improved technology and peace of mind in knowing that your air conditioner is starting fresh with a warranty in place.
